Annual Tune-Up, One Visit, Summer Solved

A failing AC almost never fails without warning. A capacitor that's drifting out of spec, a coil that hasn't been cleaned in three summers, refrigerant pressure that's slowly dropping. All small problems while they're small, all expensive problems by August. An annual tune-up is the one visit that catches them while they're still cheap.

Our 20-point inspection covers the system end to end: refrigerant charge, coil cleaning, electrical connections, blower bearings, drain line, thermostat calibration, and full performance testing under load. Most visits wrap in under an hour. If we find something that needs attention, we tell you straight and quote it transparently. No upsells, no pressure.

If your system is already acting up, an AC repair diagnostic is the right starting point instead. And if you're considering replacement, the AC replacement page covers the repair-vs-replace math. Most homeowners book the AC tune-up in spring and pair it with a furnace tune-up in fall to keep both systems documented under warranty year-round.

Why Tune-Ups Matter

Five Reasons To Book An Annual AC Tune-Up

Each one is its own reason. Stack all five and the math against skipping maintenance gets impossible to ignore.

Lower Cooling Bills

Clean coils and proper refrigerant charge keep your system running at rated efficiency, not 70% of it.

Fewer Repair Calls

Most summer breakdowns start as small issues a tune-up would have caught months earlier.

Longer System Life

Well-maintained AC systems often run 15-20 years. Neglected ones tap out at 10-12.

Warranty Stays Valid

Documented maintenance keeps manufacturer warranties intact when you need to file a claim.

Issues Caught Early

A weak capacitor or drifting refrigerant charge is a quick fix in May, a no-cool emergency in July.

When To Book

Best Time For A Tune-Up Is Before You Need It

The optimal AC tune-up window for the Capital Region is April through June. Cool spring temperatures mean we can run full diagnostic cycles without putting strain on a system that's already working hard, our schedule has room for non-emergency appointments, and any issues we catch get fixed before July humidity arrives.

Wait until July and August and two things happen: the system is now under peak load when small issues become big ones, and our schedule fills with emergency repair calls so non-urgent tune-ups push back. Spring is the right window. September is the next-best fallback after the cooling season ends, so the system is ready for next year.

Honest Scope

What A Tune-Up Doesn't Cover

A tune-up is preventive maintenance, not a free diagnostic visit. If your AC is already broken, behaving weird, or showing the symptoms of a real failure, you need a different service call.

Tune-up pricing is set because the work is predictable. The minute it shifts into repair work, it stops being a tune-up. We tell you straight which side you're on before quoting anything.

Active Repairs System already broken? Book an AC repair diagnostic instead, that's a different visit type.
Refrigerant Recharge Top-offs from a leak are a repair, not maintenance. If pressure is low, we'll diagnose the leak and quote the fix.
Major Component Replacement Capacitor, contactor, motor swaps are repair work. We'll flag them at the tune-up and quote separately.
System Replacement Quotes If we determine the system is past saving, see AC replacement for the full decision and options.

Tune-Up Questions

AC Tune-Up Questions, Answered

The questions Capital Region homeowners ask about annual cooling maintenance.

Once a year, ideally between April and June before the cooling season kicks in. Most AC manufacturer warranties require documented annual maintenance to stay valid, so skipping years can cost you twice if you ever need to file a warranty claim. A spring tune-up means heading into July with a system that's actually ready.
Our 20-point inspection covers four categories: refrigerant and coils (5 points), electrical and controls (5 points), airflow and drainage (5 points), and system performance under load (5 points). Plus condenser coil cleaning, drain line clearing, thermostat calibration, filter replacement if needed, and a written service record for warranty purposes.
Yes, and the difference compounds over the season. A dirty condenser coil, a capacitor that's drifting out of spec, low refrigerant charge, or a restricted air filter all force the system to work harder for the same cooling output. Bringing those back to factory spec usually drops the summer electric bill noticeably and stops the system from over-cycling.
Most summer breakdowns we get emergency calls for started as small issues that a tune-up would have caught months earlier. Capacitor drifting out of spec, refrigerant pressure slowly dropping, drain line getting clogged, condenser coil so dirty the system overheats. Annual maintenance catches them while they're cheap, before they turn into July AC repair calls.
Most tune-up visits wrap in 45 to 60 minutes from arrival to written service record. If the system needs coil cleaning that's more involved than usual, or if we find a flagged item that needs attention, the visit can run longer. We'll always tell you upfront if something's adding time before doing the work.
