Why Sizing Matters

A New Furnace Install Lives or Dies by the Math

Most furnace installations fail before the first heating season is over, not because the equipment is bad, but because nobody did the math. An oversized unit short-cycles, wastes fuel, and burns out blower motors years early. An undersized unit runs nonstop on a ten-below January night and still can't keep the upstairs warm. Either way, you paid for a fifteen-year system that's giving you maybe eight.

We do real Manual J load calculations on every install. Square footage, ceiling heights, window count and orientation, insulation R-values, infiltration rates, and Capital Region climate data all go into the formula. The output tells us exactly how many BTUs your home needs at design temperature, which then determines the right furnace size, the right ductwork specs, and the right efficiency rating to actually deliver on the long-term value you're paying for.

If your current furnace is at the end of its life, take a look at our furnace replacement page for the repair-vs-replace decision tree. If you're planning a new build or addition, we can size from blueprints before the walls are even closed up.

Right-Sized For Your Home

Furnace Sizing for Capital Region Homes

Rough sizing guidance based on Capital Region winter design conditions. The real number depends on insulation, windows, and ductwork, which is why we always run a full load calculation before quoting.

Small Home

Under 1,200 sq ft

40-60kBTU/hr Recommended

Bungalows, ranches, and smaller starter homes in older neighborhoods like Mechanicville and parts of Troy.

Most Common

1,200-2,400 sq ft

60-90kBTU/hr Recommended

The majority of Capital Region homes: two-story builds in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, Malta, and Saratoga.

Large Home

2,400+ sq ft

90-120kBTU/hr Recommended

Larger newer builds, historic Victorians in Saratoga Springs, and homes with finished basements or additions.

Important: Square footage alone is a starting point, not the answer. Insulation quality, window count, ceiling height, ductwork condition, and your home's air infiltration rate can shift the right BTU number by 20% or more in either direction. Always insist on a real load calculation, not a thumb-in-the-air estimate.

Done By The Book

Permits & Inspections Aren't Optional

Plenty of installers will quietly skip the permit to save themselves the time and you the inspection fee. It's a bad trade. Without a permit on file, your homeowner's insurance can deny claims tied to the install, your manufacturer warranty can be voided, and a future home sale will run into trouble when the buyer's inspector asks for documentation that doesn't exist.

Install Questions

Furnace Installation Questions, Answered

Honest answers to what Capital Region homeowners ask us most before signing off on a new furnace install.

Most residential furnace installations take one day. A standard swap-out where we're replacing an existing furnace with a new one in the same location is typically six to eight hours from start to commissioning. If we're modifying ductwork, relocating the unit, or upgrading venting, it can run into a second day. Either way, your home is back to comfortable heat by the time we leave.
It depends on your square footage, insulation quality, window count, ceiling height, and how leaky your home is. Rough rule of thumb for Capital Region winters: 40-60k BTU for homes under 1,200 sq ft, 60-90k for the 1,200-2,400 range, and 90-120k for larger homes. But sizing by square footage alone is the same mistake most installers make. We always run a real Manual J load calculation on every install so you get the right unit, not the closest one off the truck.
Usually yes, depending on what you're upgrading from. An old 80% AFUE furnace replaced with a modern 96% AFUE unit typically cuts heating fuel costs around 20-25%. The exact savings depend on your fuel type, current usage, and how leaky the rest of the house is. Pair the install with a tune-up the following fall and you'll see the full payoff.
Yes, almost everywhere in the Capital Region. We pull the permit, file it with your local building department, schedule the post-install inspection, and meet the inspector on site. Skipping permits saves a contractor a couple hours of paperwork and exposes you to insurance denials and voided warranties down the road. Not worth it.
Installation covers any new furnace install: first-time install in a new build, addition, or swapping out an old unit. Furnace replacement specifically covers replacing a failing or aged-out existing unit, with a stronger focus on the repair-vs-replace decision and efficiency upgrade math. If your old furnace is in the basement and you need a new one in its place, either page applies, just different angles. If you're putting heating in a new addition or new build, this is the right page.
