Why Installation Quality Matters

The Install Is The Whole Game

A great boiler installed poorly will underperform from day one. A solid boiler installed right will run for decades.

Boiler installation is one of those jobs where the equipment matters less than the work. You can buy the same high-efficiency boiler from us as you can from any other Capital Region contractor, but how it gets piped, vented, sized, and commissioned determines whether you get 25 years of reliable heat or 5 years of frustration. Most boiler problems trace back to install decisions made on day one.

Proper sizing is the single biggest factor. An undersized boiler runs constantly and never quite catches up on the coldest nights. An oversized boiler short-cycles, burns more fuel than it should, and wears out moving parts faster. We run a proper heat-loss calculation on every install based on your home's square footage, insulation, window count, and the actual climate data for your part of the Capital Region. No guessing. No "this is what we put in the last one." Real math, every time.

From there, the install itself involves dozens of details that separate a good job from a great one: pipe sizing for proper water flow, zone valve placement, expansion tank sizing, condensate line routing on high-efficiency units, combustion air supply, venting clearances, and full commissioning before we sign off. We do all of it as part of the standard install, not as add-ons. See the full boilers service overview for how this fits into our broader boiler work, or jump straight to boiler replacement if your current system is at end of life.

The Install Process

From Quote To Warm House

Most boiler installations take one to two working days. Here is what happens at each stage.

Step 01 · Pre-Install

In-Home Evaluation & Quote

A licensed technician comes to your home, looks at the existing system or installation location, measures the heated square footage, checks insulation, asks about how the current system performs (or doesn't), and runs a heat-loss calculation. You get a written flat-rate quote with the boiler model, full install scope, and total price. No diagnostic fees.

Heat-loss calc Written quote No diagnostic fee
Step 02 · Install Day

Removal, Piping, and Installation

The crew arrives on the scheduled day with the new boiler, all materials, and protective floor coverings. The old system gets drained and removed. New piping, valves, and venting go in to spec. For high-efficiency units, condensate lines and PVC venting are routed to code. We protect the surrounding floor and clean up the work area before we leave. Most install days end with heat back on by evening.

Step 03 · Commissioning

Testing, Balancing, and Handoff

Before we call the job done, the system gets fully commissioned. That means firing the boiler, testing combustion, verifying water flow to every zone, balancing temperatures across the house, and confirming all safety controls are responding correctly. We walk you through the new thermostat, the location of the shutoff and bleed valves, and the maintenance schedule. Permits get filed with the local inspector. Warranty paperwork goes to you.

What Affects Installation Price

Boiler installation pricing varies more than most homeowners expect, and we believe in being honest about why. Here are the real factors that move the number on a quote, and how we handle each one.

Always Included In Our Quote
Heat-loss calc, permits, old unit haul-away, full commissioning, and warranty coverage. No surprise line items at the end of the job.

Many installations qualify for New York State rebates and utility incentives that reduce the upfront cost. We walk every quote through the current rebate landscape and help you apply for what fits.

FAQ

Boiler Installation Questions

The questions homeowners ask most often when weighing a boiler install.

Common signs that point to replacement instead of repair include frequent repair calls in the last 1-2 years, rising fuel bills despite no change in usage habits, uneven heat between rooms, and any system over 15-20 years old. If the cost of repair is more than half the cost of replacement and the boiler is over 15 years old, replacement usually makes more financial sense. We give an honest assessment on every quote without trying to push you toward the more expensive option.
Most standard boiler-to-boiler replacements finish in a single workday. Switching fuel types (oil to gas, or upgrading from a standard boiler to a high-efficiency condensing unit with new venting) typically adds a half day. Whole new installs in homes that have never had hydronic heat, where new piping has to be run to radiators or baseboards, take longer and we scope that in the quote. We always confirm timeline in writing before install day.
We install all major residential boiler brands including Weil-McLain, Burnham, Buderus, Navien, Rinnai, and Lochinvar, plus the high-efficiency lines from Carrier, Bryant, and Lennox. The right brand for your home depends on fuel type, sizing requirements, budget, and whether you are going standard, high-efficiency, or combi. We are not married to any single manufacturer. We recommend what fits your home best.
In most cases, yes, significantly. Upgrading from an older 70% AFUE boiler to a modern 95%+ high-efficiency unit means every dollar of fuel produces 25% more heat. On a Capital Region home spending $2,500-$3,500 per year on heating fuel, that typically returns $400-$700 per year in lower bills. The exact savings depend on your existing system's actual efficiency, your home's heat loss, and how often you run the boiler. We give a realistic savings estimate during the quote.
Yes, frequently. New York State has multiple rebate and tax credit programs for high-efficiency heating equipment, and utilities including National Grid and NYSEG run their own incentive programs. Specific dollar amounts change year to year, so we walk every quote through the current rebate landscape and help you apply for the ones you qualify for. The incentives can take meaningful money off the install cost on high-efficiency upgrades.
In nearly every case, yes. Modern boilers are designed to work with the cast iron radiators and baseboard systems already in your home. There is no need to rip out original radiators. The boiler is the heat source and the radiators are the heat delivery, and the two parts are independent. Many Capital Region historic home upgrades involve a brand new high-efficiency boiler running through 80-year-old original radiators with zero compromise in comfort or performance.
