Right Size, Right System

Installation Starts With Real Sizing Math, Not A Guess

An AC system that's undersized will run constantly and never catch up on a 90-degree Capital Region day. Oversized and it'll short-cycle, fail to dehumidify, and burn out parts years early. The biggest variable in whether your new install actually performs is whether someone did the cooling load calculation correctly before quoting the equipment.

Our installs start with a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your square footage, insulation quality, window orientation, ceiling height, and the specific climate data for the Capital Region. Then we spec the equipment to match. If you're swapping an old unit instead of installing fresh, check the AC replacement path for the repair-vs-replace math first.

We install central air, ductless mini-splits, and dual-mode heat pumps. For older Saratoga and Troy homes without ductwork, mini-splits are usually the right call. For newer Clifton Park and Malta builds with existing ducts, central air is typically the better fit. Pairing the AC install with a furnace installation at the same time is common and usually saves on labor. We'll walk you through the decision honestly.

AC Sizing 101

How AC Tonnage Matches Your Capital Region Home

A rough guide to typical tonnage by home size. Real sizing depends on insulation, windows, ceiling height, and orientation, so a Manual J calc is the only way to know for sure.

Smaller Homes

Bungalows, Townhomes, Ranches

1.5-2 Tons
18,000 - 24,000 BTU/hr

Typical for homes around 1,000-1,500 sq ft. Common in older Saratoga, Troy, and Mechanicville housing stock. Single-zone central air or 1-2 zone mini-split setup.

Mid-Size Homes

Standard Family Homes

2.5-3 Tons
30,000 - 36,000 BTU/hr

The most common Capital Region install size. Fits homes around 1,500-2,500 sq ft. Standard for newer Clifton Park, Malta, Niskayuna, and Latham builds with central ductwork.

Larger Homes

Two-Story & High Ceilings

3.5-5 Tons
42,000 - 60,000 BTU/hr

Homes around 2,500-3,500+ sq ft, or smaller homes with vaulted ceilings and lots of glass. Often paired with HVAC zoning to handle the temperature spread between floors.

Central Air or Mini-Split?

Which AC System Fits Your Home

Two main install paths in the Capital Region. The right choice depends on what's already in your house and how you live in it.

Central Air

One outdoor condenser, indoor air handler tied into your existing ductwork. Single thermostat, whole-house cooling, hidden equipment. Best when you already have ductwork that's in decent shape.

Best for: Newer homes with existing central ductwork (Clifton Park, Malta, Niskayuna, Latham builds from the last 30 years)
Strengths: Lower install cost per ton, hidden equipment, single thermostat control
Tradeoff: Whole-house single-zone (unless paired with HVAC zoning)

Ductless Mini-Split

Outdoor condenser with individual indoor wall-mounted heads, one per zone. No ductwork required. Each room or zone gets its own thermostat for true room-by-room control.

Best for: Older Saratoga, Troy, Schenectady, Mechanicville homes without central ductwork, or additions/basements/garages
Strengths: No duct retrofit needed, room-by-room zoning built in, high SEER ratings, heat-pump capable
Tradeoff: Visible indoor heads, higher per-zone equipment cost

4

Install Day

Permits pulled in advance. Crew arrives on time, old equipment removed if applicable, new system installed, refrigerant charged, system commissioned, walkthrough done. Most installs wrap in 1-2 days.

5

Inspection & Rebate Filing

Municipal inspection scheduled by us. NYSERDA rebate paperwork submitted on your behalf. Then schedule your first AC tune-up in spring to keep the warranty intact.

We Handle Permits And Inspections

New York requires permits and inspections on AC installations across all Capital Region municipalities. Skipping them voids manufacturer warranties and creates problems at resale time. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector on site. You don't chase town hall.

AC Installation Questions

AC Installation Questions, Answered

The questions Capital Region homeowners ask before signing off on a new AC install.

If you have no existing AC system, this is an installation question, not a repair-vs-replace one. If you've got an aging unit that's struggling, that's a different decision: check the AC replacement page for the repair-vs-replace math, or if it's just acting up rather than dying, start with an AC repair diagnostic. Quick rule of thumb: 12-15+ years old, repair quote over half of replacement cost, or two or more repair calls in the last couple summers usually points to replacement.
Most central AC installs into existing ductwork wrap in 1 day. Mini-split installs depend on zone count: a single-zone is usually a one-day job, a 3-4 zone setup runs 2 days. Fresh-build installs with new ductwork take longer. We'll give you a real timeline at quote time, not a generous estimate that slips by day three.
Rough range: 1.5-2 tons for smaller homes (1,000-1,500 sq ft), 2.5-3 tons for typical family homes (1,500-2,500 sq ft), 3.5-5 tons for larger or high-ceiling homes (2,500-3,500+ sq ft). But real sizing depends on insulation, windows, orientation, and Capital Region climate data. We run a Manual J load calculation on every install before quoting equipment.
Usually yes, especially if you're upgrading from an older 10-13 SEER unit to a modern 16-22 SEER system. Real-world savings depend on how much you ran the old unit and how well your home is insulated, but most homeowners see noticeable summer-bill reductions and a system that actually keeps up on hot days. NYSERDA rebates on high-efficiency installs help offset the upfront difference.
Yes. Flexible financing approved through trusted lending partners so you don't have to front the whole cost of a new system. We'll walk you through the terms when we quote so the monthly payment is clear before you sign. Most installs also qualify for NYSERDA rebate programs that we file on your behalf.
